Unplug your electronics - did you know they are sucking up power even when they are OFF? (Goal Met!)
240-large

I had no idea that my stereo was still using power even though I'm not using it. I read that a playstation 3 takes 5x the power than a mid-size fridge - when it's "OFF"! No way. The solution is to put them on powerstrips and turn off the strip when you are away. Sounds easy enough to me.

January 23, 2011   Mary W. Contributor says, I put a power strip on the dvd/tv/music and and my phone charger lives in a drawer all day (it's only allowed out at night when it's charging the phone). The only thing left are lamps and a clock, kitchen appliances and the computer. I'm assuming it's not a good idea to turn off my computer/hard drive/wireless. Any ideas for that aside from sleep mode?

September 16, 2010   April S. says, I live in the UK and one thing they have over here (as standard in all homes) is switches on all plug sockets. Because actually, regardless of whether something is plugged into the socket, if the socket is live...it's still using power. So, buy and intall plugs with switches on them...take the savings a bit farther still.

Hi, April... I lived overseas for years, and wow, do I miss those powerpoints! I'm not sure we can even get those here across the pond, but I'll put it on my list to find out. In the meantime, I'm doing my best to unplug the toaster, mixer, random chargers, you name it! Thanks for joining...

September 16, 2010   Heidi M. Contributor Old houses and powerstrips

We have so many appliances and doo-dads, but so few outlets. And so we have powerstrips!

In just about every room (especially the kitchen and office.)

I'll look at all of these this week and see what really needs to be left on and what I can safely turn off.
