We're trying to reduce our water usage. Last year, we grew our own vegetables in our yard in Seattle, but found our water bill went up quite a bit. We're planted vegetables again this year, but we're trying to be much smarter about it this time around.

We're thinking about water conservation partially with sustainability in mind, of course -- but also with dollar savings in mind. Seattle, where we live most of the year, has much higher water rates once you go over a set amount, especially in the summer. On Orcas Island, where we are for much of the summer, and where we have a well, we want to dip into our water supply less.

What are people doing to decrease their water usage?

For most of last summer on Orcas, when we washed dishes in the sink, we put a bucket in the sink to catch the gray water. Then we watered our vegetables with that. We actually never turned on our garden house because we were able to do all the watering we needed with water that would have run down the drain from the dishwashing.

Great story, Barry! We're also trying to watch our water use down here in Portland. I really like how our water utility shows our usage graphically by quarter for the whole year. You can see the seasonal swing in usage and easily compare to the previous season.
