Last night we had baby carrots pulled from the ground a moment before dinner time, plus a salad full of yummy butter lettuce and spinach - and finished off with a bowl of blueberries from our first-to-ripen bush; it's so empowering to take children through the process of poking a teeny seed into the soil and then caring for seedlings as they emerge and strengthen, and then reveling in the amazing resulting produce. You just can't get more organic or more local - or more delicious!

I am heartened by the number of new raised beds I've seen around Portland this year. I even saw that someone had attached a topsy turvy tomato to a stop sign on their corner - perhaps the best spot for sun available to them!
